Columbus at the Grand Cinema and the Varsity Theatre

Kogonada’s debut feature continues its Seattle-area run this week, expanding to the Grand in Tacoma and the Varsity. The film, about two lonely people (John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson) bonding over the modern architecture of Columbus, Indiana, played here at SIFF before opening theatrically in August (and it will be playing next month as well at VIFF). It’s one of the year’s most striking American films, equal parts Ozu and Linklater, and one that isn’t easily dismissed. I liked it a lot more than my colleagues here at SSS (as we discussed on our SIFF podcast), but Nathan’s review, wrestling with its flaws and strengths, is a terrific read.

Nocturama at the Northwest Film Forum

For some reason only playing for a single show, on Sunday night at the Film Forum, is Bertrand Bonello’s spectacular and befuddling story of a group of young people who coordinate a series of terrorist attacks around Paris and then hole up for the night in a department store. The first half is exceptional suspense filmmaking, relentlessly following the twists and turns of their scheme. The second half dissipates the action while cranking up the tension, as the kids don’t quite know what to do next. It’s one of the more controversial releases of the year, and we talked a bit about it on our second SIFF podcast and Ryan wrote about it this week.

All that Jazz at the Northwest Film Forum

Bob Fosse’s loosely auto-biographical film, about a Broadway director with health and overwork problems (inspired by his attempt to stage Chicago and edit Lenny simultaneously), is the last great musical of the Hollywood studio style, features the best performance of Roy Scheider’s distinguished career and the grandest work of that system’s most distinctive choreographer, and is the best movie of 1979. It plays this week on Saturday and Sunday only on 35mm. Also at the NWFF this weekend is a double feature of documentaries about tap-dancing from George Nierenberg that look really cool: No Maps On My Taps & About Tap, playing Friday and Saturday only.

70mm Festival at the Cinerama

Two terrific American indies open this week in wide release: Ingrid Goes West and Good Time, but we’d remiss not to highlight the latest version of the Cinerama’s festival of 70mm film. The calendar is packed with the usual suspects (Lawrence of Arabia, Vertigo, Aliens, Baraka), but if you’ve never had a chance to see them, the next two weeks will be something special. The highlight of the festival, outside the canonical classics, is undoubtedly Sleeping Beauty, which remains the best of Disney’s animated films. I’d also challenge anyone to only go see Khartoum and It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World while skipping everything else.

Taipei Story at the SIFF Film Center

The new restoration of Edward Yang’s 1985 classic Taipei Story comes to SIFF for three days only this week. A seminal film of the New Taiwan Cinema, Yang’s second feature was co-written by him along with Hou Hsiao-hsien and Chu T’ien-wen (who would co-write all of Hou’s subsequent films), and stars Hou, Wu Nien-jen (accomplished screenwriter, director of A Borrowed Life, star of Yang’s Yi yi) and Tsai Chin (a popular singer). The film chronicles the dissolution of the relationship between Hou and Tsai as they’re caught between the conflicting forces of past and present, capitalism and tradition, at work in rapidly a modernizing Taiwan. Long unavailable in anything like its original form in the US, its restoration (and recent release as part of a Criterion Collection boxset) is one of the cinematic events of the year.

Dawson City: Frozen Time at the Northwest Film Forum

Two of my favorite films from this past SIFF open this week, and while I really loved Kogonada’s ode to Ozu and modern architecture, Columbus (playing at the SIFF Uptown), our Featured Film this week has to be Bill Morrison’s sprawling documentary Dawson City: Frozen Time. Springing from the discovery of a horde of silent films buried under an old swimming pool to the concurrent histories of a Klondike Gold Rush town, the North American West and early cinema, and constructed to a large degree out of images from the discovered and decaying nitrate trove, it’s a movie about a specific time and place and about the ghostly interconnectedness that links us inescapably to our past.

Landline at the Uptown and the AMC Seattle

Gillian Robespierre and Jenny Slate’s follow-up to Obvious Child, one of the finest romantic comedies of the decade, is a more expansive film, following the cracking up of a New York family in the mid-90s as two sisters (Slate and Abby Quinn) discover their father (John Turturro) has been cheating on their mother. It’s a coming of age story in triplicate, focusing on women dealing with crises at different stages of life (along the lines of Sylvia Chang’s 20 30 40). I wrote a bit about it at SIFF this year, and this week Melissa takes a longer look at it. Landline opens at the Uptown and what we’ve apparently agreed to call the “AMC Seattle 10” (formerly the Seattle Sundance, formerly the Metro Cinemas).

Hermia and Helena at the Northwest Film Forum

The latest in Argentinean director Matías Piñeiro’s films inspired by Shakespeare takes A Midsummer Night’s Dream as its jumping off point. Camila (Agustina Muñoz) goes from Buenos Aires to New York as part of a special school program where she’ll work on translating the play. The Bard is less apparently central to the story than he was in Viola or The Princess of France, instead we track several of Camila’s relationships past and present; romantic, familial, and mysterious. Somewhat more conventional but no less affecting than those previous films, it was one of the highlights at last year’s Vancouver Film Festival.
