Featured Film:

120 Beats per Minute at the AMC Seattle and Faces Places at the SIFF Film Center

Two of the very best movies of 2017 open this week on single screens in Seattle. Robin Campillo’s 120 Beats per Minute (BPM) is the story of the Paris branch of ACT UP during the early 90s, an expert melding of suspenseful political filmmaking with personal romance and tragedy. Faces Places, by venerable New Wave icon Agnès Varda and ambiguous photographer JR is the year’s best best buddy comedy and probably the nicest movie of the year too, as the two travel around France making large pictures of the people they meet. It’s also the 2017 movie most likely to make you want to punch Jean-Luc Godard in the nose. Taken together, these two French films make a compelling argument that European Cinema is not, in fact, dead. On the other hand, Palme d’Or winner The Square opens too this week at the Uptown and the Lincoln Square.

Wonderstruck in Limited Release

On its surface, Todd Haynes’s latest appears to have little in common with prior works by the director of Carol, I’m Not There, Safe and Far From Heaven. But his adaptation of an illustrated novel by Hugo author Brian Selznick, about a deaf boy and a deaf girl, separated by 50 years who run away to New York’s Natural History museum epitomizes a lot of what makes me uneasy about his work, while also being a very satisfying family adventure film. Halloween Week at the Grand Illusion

No theatre in town has more fun come Halloween season than the Grand Illusion. Their second week of oddball grindhouse rarities and bona fide classics continues this week with an eclectic mix of cult favorites and obscurities, playing on everything from actual 35mm film (The Hidden and a mystery triple-feature program called “Nature Gone Amok” and Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste) to VHS (Terror on the Menu) to digital (Ganja & Hess, Effects, Otto; Or, Up With Dead People). The highlight is probably the new digital restoration of Mario Bava’s Kill Baby Kill, playing Saturday and Sunday, which if nothing else should whet your appetite for the Northwest Film Forum’s Giallo series, which also kicks off this week with Bava’s Blood and Black Lace on Wednesday). The week wraps up with another must-see, Takashi Miike’s Dead or Alive, leading-in to their opening of Miike’s latest film, Blade of the Immortal, next Friday.

The Florida Project at the SIFF Egyptian and the Lincoln Square

Normally I’d use this space to highlight the Northwest Film Forums presentation of an unearthed, uncut 35mm print of Dario Argento’s classic horror film Suspiria, with star Jessica Harper in attendance. But they’re playing it one night only and both shows have been sold out for weeks. So if, like me, you’re shut out of the movie event of the fall, you should go see what is quite probably the best American film of 2017 so far, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project. We like it so much, we reviewed it twice in a single day. Here’s Ryan’s take on it and here’s mine.

Our VIFF coverage is on-going though the festival has come to an end, and there’s good stuff to be seen on the art house circuit (the TWIST film festival, Ex Libris at the Grand, Days of Heaven at SAM), and I wouldn’t normally feature one of these TCM/Fathom Events repertory showings, but it’s my wife’s birthday week and this is her favorite movie, an adaptation of the book by her favorite author. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss it this Sunday and Wednesday at any of several multiplexes around the region. If you have seen it, you might as well watch it again. It never, ever gets old.

We’re still covering the Vancouver Film Festival (in fact, I’m still in Canada), so far we have reviews of 24 Frames, Forest Movie and Prototype, Claire’s Camera, Maison du bonheur, Scaffold and Let Your Heart Be Light, and Western, with more to come over the next week or so. In the meantime, one of the best films of the year is opening this week at the NWFF, Frederick Wiseman’s look at the New York Public Library system. Prowling around various branches through the city, focusing on the people who organize and fund the library and the people who use it, and the implicit class and racial differences that separate them, Wiseman demonstrates both the necessity of the liberal project and its fundamental inadequacy.

The Big Sleep at the Seattle Art Museum

SAM’s autumn series devoted to film noir kicks off this Thursday with Howard Hawks’s seminal The Big Sleep, a film which has played here on Seattle Screens many times before (hard to believe it’s now been a decade since we played it at the Metro), but one which only grows stranger every time you see it. We talked about it on The Frances Farmer Show last spring. Coming up in the Here Comes the Night series are established classics like Chinatown, Kiss of Death, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Pickup on South Street, alongside more obscure gems like The File on Thelma Jordan, Pretty Poison, The Naked Alibi, and Douglas Sirk’s Lured, starring Lucille Ball and George Sanders.

Columbus at the Grand Cinema and the Varsity Theatre

Kogonada’s debut feature continues its Seattle-area run this week, expanding to the Grand in Tacoma and the Varsity. The film, about two lonely people (John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson) bonding over the modern architecture of Columbus, Indiana, played here at SIFF before opening theatrically in August (and it will be playing next month as well at VIFF). It’s one of the year’s most striking American films, equal parts Ozu and Linklater, and one that isn’t easily dismissed. I liked it a lot more than my colleagues here at SSS (as we discussed on our SIFF podcast), but Nathan’s review, wrestling with its flaws and strengths, is a terrific read.

Nocturama at the Northwest Film Forum

For some reason only playing for a single show, on Sunday night at the Film Forum, is Bertrand Bonello’s spectacular and befuddling story of a group of young people who coordinate a series of terrorist attacks around Paris and then hole up for the night in a department store. The first half is exceptional suspense filmmaking, relentlessly following the twists and turns of their scheme. The second half dissipates the action while cranking up the tension, as the kids don’t quite know what to do next. It’s one of the more controversial releases of the year, and we talked a bit about it on our second SIFF podcast and Ryan wrote about it this week.
